He understood, and even hung out to chat with me. So I inform him about the lack of sticker, and that I wouldn’t be able to let him onstage. An older gentlemen walks over to me, probably not 100% sober, and tries to get onstage. So 8p rolls around and I start looking for our special sticker. Mind you, I’m meeting a bunch of interesting folks trying to get backstage. Ok- I get it, after 8p, no sticker, no access, easy enough. Which she proceeded to pedantically wave in my face assuming I’m just another moron. A few hours into the show on day two she storms up to me and declares that after 8p no one, absolutely no one, gets back stage without this special sticker on their pass. But she was the head festival organizer so I did my best to make her happy. She was a sturdy girl and didn’t seem to like the security staff, or maybe just me. Particularly this one gal- we’ll call her Sharon, the uber Karen. The guys from the security were cool to work with, but the event organizers were another story. I hung out with Willie Nelson, the guys from Govt Mule and a few others who I can remember.Ī few others I cant remember, or didn’t know is key here and we’ll get back to that. Come Festival time I must have impressed someone because I’ve been assigned the gatekeeper to the backstage entrance. Some friends hooked me up, I got an interview and was hired.
One day word got ‘round that a local Security company was looking for help staffing security for the upcoming Jazz Aspen festival. It wasn’t uncommon to have two or three gigs going on- because its Aspen and I’m not a trust funder.
Being a seasonal job you were always looking for some kind of hustle to get you through the summers and off seasons. When I was younger I did the ski bum thing and lived in Aspen and was a ski patroller in the winter. A couple friends and I were talking about this the other day and I figured it probably belonged here, someone may get a kick… TL:DR at the end.
